Red Boston Terrier
A Red Boston Terrier can be easily distinguished among other dogs. The Boston Terrier looks more like a Bulldog than like a Terrier. It belongs to the Mastiff group and the AKC Non-Sporting group. Dogs of this breed are very intelligent, lively, and friendly. In appearance, they are powerful, well-balanced, compactly built, short-headed and short-tailed. The coat in this breed is smooth and short.
According to the AKC breed standard, Boston Terriers occur in seal, brindle or black with symmetrical white markings between the eyes, around the muzzle, and on the chest. Some dogs have a white collar and white markings on the legs. There should be no preponderance of white in Boston Terriers. If all other qualities are equal, brindle dogs are preferred. A red Boston Terrier will be disqualified from the show ring, even if it corresponds to the standard in other points. Solid black, seal or brindle as well as gray and liver dogs are also disqualified from the show ring.
Seal Boston Terriers are actually black, but when viewed in the sun, their coat has a red cast. Seal is a common coat color in this breed; if you are offered a “red Boston Terrier” with a red cast on the black coat for a greater price, don’t be deceived.
Originated from the cross between the English White Terrier and an English Bulldog, Boston Terriers of the 19th century were bred for pit fighting. The Boston Terrier of today lacks the aggression of its ancestors and makes friendly pets and playmates for children. These dogs come in three size varieties: under 15 pounds in weight, from 15 to 20 pounds, and from 20 to 25 pounds. Some unethical breeders produce so-called “teacup” Boston Terriers, which weigh under 10 pounds. Such tiny dogs have a short lifespan and are susceptible to genetic disorders. True breed fanciers neither breed, nor buy tiny Boston Terriers. When choosing a purebred dog of this breed, pay attention to its personality, temperament, and trainability, but not to conformation alone. When a person is after a red Boston Terrier only, it means that he/she is an impulsive buyer who knows little on the breed.
