Boston Terriers Puppies - History

Boston Terriers started their history in Boston, in 1865. They descended from crossings with English Bulldogs, White English Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and other fighting dogs. Since the sport of pit fighting was rather popular at the end of the 19th century, these breeds were used to produce a dog that could meet the needs of pit fighting fanciers.

Thus, Robert C. Hooper, of Boston, acquired Judge, a dog that evidently was a cross between the English Bulldog and the English Terrier. The descendants of Judge started to be called "stabeleman's" or "barber dogs." They tried to improve the breed's fighting qualities as well as its personality traits. The dog often made a good family companion.

Bit by bit, the dogs acquired more or less similar appearance, which proved the emergence of a new breed. There was a particular confusion of names applied to the breed. It interfered with naming the first breed club. The proposal to establish the American Bullterrier Club of Boston was rejected since American Bullterrier owners objected strongly to it. As the result, breed fanciers had to name the dog the Boston Terrier because of the place of its origin and a considerable number of dogs in the Boston area. Thus, the Boston Terrier Club was renamed in 1893. Since that time, it successfully promoted Boston Terriers and did its best for the welfare of the breed.
